Queerator Academy Presents:

Rooted Writing 101

What?

Rooted Writing 101 is an online writing course to help queer folks connect with the inherent hope that comes with telling stories and living as a queer person. It is the first writing class in my Queerator Academy series. This course is for seasoned writers, doubtful writers, and non-writers alike, anyone who likes playing with words, journaling, reading, exploring new worlds, or wants to get to know themselves and storytelling more deeply.

Storytelling has saved my life many times over. More specifically, as a queer, trans, disabled white person, storytelling from my unique experience and being supported in my authentic healing has saved my life. Right now, with global crises constantly swirling, I’ve struggled to find the hope and the reason for creating anything. I’m launching the Queerator Academy as a way to create a space for radical imagination, empathetic connection, and sharing of craft tools to tell authentic, truth-filled stories infused with the inherent hope that comes with queer creation. With ten years of teaching experience, trauma-informed and anti-racist practices, and an MA in Writing for Young People, this class will help you reconnect with your hope, enhance your confidence, and connect you with a like-minded community so that you can craft creative writing magic.

When?

Rooted Writing 101 is currently closed for enrollment. Registration will be open again in late spring.

Where?

Rooted Writing is an online course, so you can enjoy it (and implement it) right from where you are!

Along with the class content you will receive access to a private Queerator Academy discord where folks have access to me and their classmates including office hours, opportunities to give feedback that will truly shape the course as we learn together, and spaces for connection with our passions and others who are just as wildly curious as we are. Access to this discord will never expire, so as the queerator community expands, so will the discord community, allowing you to be on the ground floor of building a thriving creative queer community as well as having first access to any new resources and content.

Who are you?

I’m Fox, a writer, creative educator, and writing coach. I created Rooted Writing 101 after spending 10 years studying and writing on my own and teaching within other communities, such as GrubStreet and Esalen Institute. I created it to help queer folks connect with the inherent hope that comes with telling stories and living as a queer person. There is so much beauty in embodying our lives through the eyes of storytelling and I want to help folks step into that place where they aren’t afraid to truly get quiet, listen, and create what is calling them.

Here’s my official bio:
Fox Welsh is a writer, educator, and creator who helps queer folks to connect their creative center and tell authentic stories so that they can spend more time creating hope and less time staring hopelessly at the blank page.

They have ten years of teaching experience in various creative writing genres, including page and spoken word poetry, personal essays, writing for young people, and novel writing. They received an MA in Writing for Young People in 2018 from Bath Spa University and are currently drafting their third novel.

They reside in Seattle with their partner Katelin, their dog, cat, guinea pigs, and snail.

WHY Rooted Writing 101?

I created Rooted Writing 101 for two reasons. The first reason is that I believe every person deserves a safe space to create and explore their spirit and their voice and I find that writing classes and online classes don’t always make that space accessible.

The second reason is because in our current world, I realized that reconnecting to creative hope was exactly what I and many other queer folks need. Creativity is about reimagining the way we experience the world and sharing it. With many queer folks are feeling like their voice doesn’t matter or have no motivation to create or no idea where to start, I launched this course to help change that.

Rooted Writing provides a space to explore those ideas and a framework to create that space for yourself and others long after the class has ended. Ritual can be used to create space for safety, hope, and a belief that things will change even if they are hard right now. It’s one of the most powerful tools I’ve encountered. So integrating it into writing made perfect sense to me!

FAQ

Question: How is this different from other creative writing online classes?

Answer: Some of the skills you learn with me you may have been introduced to or worked with in classes before, however in this class we will be approaching tools with a focus more on rooting into our authenticity as queer people and finding hope in our imaginings. It is focused on giving you the skills not only to tell stories, but create the spaces where stories come alive. Instead of looking at the skill from the outside in, we work from the inside out, connecting deeply to ourselves and our own experiences so that we can learn the why of a writing tool instead of just the how

Question: Why does it cost this much?

Answer: The entire content of this course is worth over $5,000. However in order to connect with folks, make the content accessible, and be able to sustain my business, I am currently charging $400. The cost of this course will go up after our first cohort.

I know that for many people, $20 can be a lot of money. Know that if you truly cannot afford the cost of this course, I completely understand. That’s why I’m offering the first module completely free.

Question: What if I’m not queer?

Answer: Everyone identifies differently, and you may not identify with queerness. I am not going to be policing anyone’s identity who signs up for this course, so if it resonates with you, you are welcome. Just know that this is a space built for the LGBTQIA+ community and it is important to stay in your own lane when discussing marginalized identities. Speak from your own personal experience and listen to those with differing experiences. Your lens is unique no matter your identity.

Question: I like the sound of this course but I’m not a writer or a creator. Should I sign up for this course?

Answer: If you want to, yes. This course is all levels. Storytelling is a skill that translates to so many parts of our lives, from communicating with business partners, sharing experiences with loved ones, to creating art. We will be starting by connecting with our own experiences and using writing to tell stories from those jumping off points. In this course you are welcome to write in any form from poetry to prose, realistic to fantastical, fiction to memoir and if you haven’t written any of those, don’t worry, I’ll provide plenty of starting points.

So grab your insecurities and join us. I’m pretty sure it will be worth it… and you’ll be calling yourself a creator or a writer by the end of the course.

Question: What is Queerator Academy?

Answer: Queerator Academy is the larger learning platform that I am in the process of building. This will be a space for queer folks to come and learn, share their creative skills and light, and build a community of queer folks unpacking their own experiences to become better, more authentic creators in our community. This is the first class in the Queerator Academy catalog.

Question: How do I join?

Answer: Registration is currently closed as cohort 1 of Rooted Writing 101 is currently in session. If you are interested in finding out about future sessions of this course and others, join the Queerator Academy Newsletter to get the latest updates.
