How to FINALLY start to write your novel

Trust me when I tell you that I am so grateful I started writing my first novel when I did. It was a mess and it took me seven years, many writing classes, an MA in writing, and maybe 300,000 words of writing and rewriting to get it to a place where I was proud of it. I remember many times over thinking to myself, what have I gotten myself into. And yet, I still keep going. I still love love it. And sometimes I still struggle to figure out what to write, where to start, how to keep going. These are some tips that have helped me even on days when I don’t want to pick up any writing implements. Writing is so many things, but for me, it has been a gift that has allowed me to show up as a more authentic and unapologetic version of myself. No matter how long it takes me to publish the novels I have written, that will always be true and I hope to never forget it.

If you want to write, just write. Write it bad. Write it silly. Write it unreadable to anyone except yourself. Write what you want, what brings you joy, what you love. The more you write what you love, the more you will love what you write.
